lullaby (after Pound's night)

night owls whisper time for bed
morning comes when one's least prepared
the sun rises no matter where
one waits for it - north south east west.

how night owls yawn time for bed
but take your time - dawn arrives slow-
ly; still, though the sun rises and though
the day unfolds - it's time for bed.

so rest your sleepy head, so rest
your burdened soul, though it's morning
and though darkness' dissipating
and though the world's bright, new and fresh

yet 'tis the least of your concerns
so my dear, rest your sleepy head
see how night owls are leaving, heed
how night owls are whisp'ring to thee:

time for bed
