when the love is over

when the love is over
she said to herself – i’ve grown a lot
cried a lot, laughed a lot
it was a good experience, all over
i've learned well
when the love is over, she looks in his eyes
she thinks – what love has done for him
it can’t be bad
made him smile some days, others, sad
you gotta win some, gotta lose some

when the love is over, she thinks of it as
a job well done
she thinks of it as a ride well worth
she thinks of healing, of candles around a bathtub
of quiet evenings, one person dinners
a world of things long forgotten
waiting to be rediscovered
when the love is over, i will find myself – she said.

the last moment they were together
she didn’t know why her eyes were wet.
why her hands trembled, why her heart stung
she didn’t want to hear what he has said
what he has learned what he has left
what he will come to discover
what he thinks
it took all that she had
to tell herself that the love
was over and to walk -
walk away.
